In 1980, Mazda introduced the fifth-generation Familia, transitioning to a front-wheel-drive (FF) layout. Mazda developed a brand-new BD platform and equipped the rear with a specially designed "SS Suspension," featuring a modified parallel-link strut system. The newly developed E-type engine, which won the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers Award, offered both excellent fuel efficiency and high power. With its balance of fuel economy, performance, and interior space, the Familia was honored as the very first recipient of the Japan Car of the Year award.
