The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe (Swallow) was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter, introduced by Germany in July 1944. Capable of speeds over 540 mph (120-190 mph faster than Allied piston fighters), it was used for high-speed interception and ground attack.
